Ebook About Winner of The 2020 Best Book Award for Military History -- American Bookfest An elite platoon of Marine Scout-Snipers, Lieutenant Frank Tachovsky’s “40 Thieves” were chosen for their willingness to defy rules and beat all-comers. When two Marines got into a fight, the loser ended up in the infirmary, the winner in the brig. Tachovsky wanted the winner on his team—a brush with military law was a recommendation. These full-blooded men were trained in a ruthless array of hand-to-hand killing techniques and then thrown into the battle for Saipan—Emperor Hirohito’s “Treasure” and the bulwark of the Japanese Empire in the Pacific—where they would wreak havoc in and around, but mostly behind, enemy lines. They witnessed inhuman atrocities; walked into an ambush after the cunning Japanese used wounded Marines as bait; endured body-punishing extremes of heat, hunger, and thirst; fought a relentless enemy who would not surrender; and watched best friends die. Now Tachovsky’s son Joseph tells their remarkable story—a story he didn’t even know until after his father’s death—reported from an extensive documentary record, including priceless mementos his father kept, and from exhaustive interviews with survivors who served under Lieutenant “Ski.” This is how America won the war in the Pacific, where “uncommon valor was a common virtue.” 40 Thieves on Saipan: The Elite Marine Scout-Snipers in One of World War II’s Bloodiest Battles is true history. It’s also an adventure you don’t want to miss.Book 40 Thieves on Saipan: The Elite Marine Scout-Snipers in One of WWII's Bloodiest Battles Review :
Being a Marine Scout Sniper from the Vietnam War when the email advertising this book came in I had to take a look. On the cover is a copy of the original list of names of the Marines. Second on the list, Bill Knuppel. Until his death a few years ago at the age of 94 he was my neighbor. Being Marines and Snipers we shared a few stories and I heard a couple that are in here. He was quite a guy. If you buy this book, which I highly recommend, you will find many others just like him. A rare breed. It is very, very well written and takes you down to the ground level. Part of the reason I joined the Marine Corps was reading Battle Cry by Leon Uris. I found out reading this book that Leon Uris was with these guys on Guadalcanal and Tarawa before Saipan. This is a classic story of incredible bravery and sacrifice in WW II. It will make you laugh and cry and realize the sacrifices young people make for their country. Hats off to the Authors. A side story of some note, Bill Knuppel, Platoon Sergeant of the Forty Theives and three of his buddies made a pact while pinned on the beaches of Tarawa. If we live through the war we'll retire on a peaceful mountain somewhere together. Upon retiring from the Corp in the early sixties, Knuppel made good. He came to Montana, bought a mountainside, put in the roads and one by one his buddies came and built their summer homes. And Bill Knuppel built in each house a massive natural stone fireplace with no mortar showing for each of his Tarawa buddies. When you hear Semper Fi, you know what that means. And I was privileged to buy the home of the first one who sold and that is how I met Bill Knuppel. Who was using a chain saw and chopping down trees at 92. The greatest generation. Buy the book! It started out as a good read but it’s hard to figure out what’s fact and war stories told in old age. The authors never miss an opportunity to denigrate the US Army. The Marines are unloading ammo on Saipan and the Army unloads a piano. C’mon. Really? Good time to remember the Army had 26 Divisions in the Pacific Theatre and killed 250,000 Japanese troops. The Marines had 6 Divisions and did far less amphibious landings. The unnecessary prejudice against the Army took the enjoyment out of the book. I’m an old guy and in my 3 wars I’ve served with all branches of the services. I’ve never seen the need to run down another service because I happened to be an Army infantryman. Just sayin.
